Illinois has a population of nearly 13 million, and while its population grew immensely during the 20th century, it has largely flatlined in the last two decades. Still, Illinois is far and away the most populated state in the Midwest.
Why look for assisted living in Illinois?
For a midwestern state, Illinois has the rare combination of featuring a massive metropolitan area along rural farmland. Other midwestern states have some sizable cities, but nothing close to Chicago.
If you’re looking for assisted living in a big city with access to highly esteemed healthcare, then you should definitely consider Illinois.
Additionally, if you like the small, rural, and far quieter lifestyle, the rest of Illinois is noteworthy with fairly reasonable commutes to Chicago where other family members may reside.

Types of Assisted Living Available in Illinois
The state breaks down the list of assisted living options as follows:
Assisted living facility: It includes the highly desirable adult foster care program as well as personal care and supervision on a continuing basis.
Residential care institution: A health care establishment that is not considered a hospital. It provides housing for temporary and permanent residents.
Assisted living center: Similar to an assisted living facility though technically not the same. Facilities are smaller (with less than 10 residents) while assisted living centers provide rooms for more than 11 seniors.
Paying for Assisted Living in Illinois
The state of Illinois provides the HCBS Waiver for Supportive Living Facilities and it’s a terrific program for financial assistance. The biggest issue is the HCBS has an enrollment cap, so the quicker you sign up the better.
It should also be noted that Illinois is looking to expand the enrollment cap hopefully in the near future. It’s already under consideration.
